“Although the paintings are solid, with a mature and grounded pallet, their internal structures swerve, arch, and carry more visual weight than can actually exist in the “real world.”  They are not, in any way, merely “upside down” but are instead propelled by their own private dynamics that take the viewers on a joyride in, around, and through a world constructed by the artist. ”  – Chris Daubert

Studio Visit in Chicago with Morgan Sims

Chicago, through the eyes of Wes Davis.

I have been trying to get Morgan Sims to do a show at Beatnik for many years. Finally, the stars aligned, and I convinced him to fill his van with artwork and make the trek from Chicago to Sacramento. Morgan will be showing work with Oakland artist Seren Moran this fall at Beatnik. “Shapeshifters” opens on First Friday, September 1st and shows until September 21st.

Earlier this summer, I made my way to Chicago to visit Morgan’s studio, and see what the life of an artist in the windy city is all about.

Bryan Valenzuela

Bryan Valenzuela is the man of the hour; and not just because of his amazing show “Form Lore” at Beatnik Studios.

Bryan was also one of the artist awarded the job of creating public artwork at the new Golden 1 Center in downtown Sacramento. If that wasn’t enough, he is also the front man of the band “Exquisite Corps”

I had a few chances to visit Bryan’s studios leading up to the opening of his show. Enjoy the photos, and make sure to visit Beatnik Studios to see his new body of work.

Beatnik is open
Tuesday 10am – 5pm
Wed & Thurs 11:30am – 5pm
and by appointment

“Form Lore” has a public reception on 1st Friday, November 4th from 6pm – 9pm

Yelena Martynovskaya studio visit

Yelena Martynovskaya is one of the four artists featured in “The Four Temperaments,” showing through March 4th at Beatnik Studios. It was an absolute treat to visit her studio and sneak a peek at how her work is created.

Yelena’s paintings are tiny splashes of playful colors and charming details. The bright elements in her paintings are never restricted to any specific placement with the panel, as many of her edges are transformed by interesting and elusive details. Her work looks different with every glance and always pulls the viewer in close. Even the smallest pieces can create a fun atmosphere and lighten any mood.

“The Four Temperaments” has a closing reception March 4th. More info about the show here:
